Newborns

Newborn photography is obviously one of the ‘cutest’ sessions that you ever have as a portrait photographer.  I am always so honored to photograph a little newborn for their first big photography session.  It makes the coming years of holiday shoots, and birthday events even more special.  This little doll was too sweet!

Photographing newborns is something I always do in my client’s home.  There are a few reasons for this.  Number one, it’s a comfortable place for both baby AND mommy.  Logistically it just makes sense.  From my perspective it’s much better because I can find things around your house that are meaningful to use during the shoot.  The last thing I ever want to do is use some arbitrary studio prop that’s been used with 1000 other sessions.  Not my style.  For this little man’s photo session I loved pulling a couple of his father’s favorite bow ties.  This little guy is his father’s namesake, and it was just too perfect.  :)

When I plan a newborn portrait in Atlanta we try to plan it for the first 10 days or so of our little one’s life.  This is how you can achieve the cute cooperation from your tiny subject.  For this session we did it a bit later than that.  In my opinion it’s just as fabulous to wait.  The little babe will be much more alert.  Sure, you may not be able to do the cute shots we all love of a newborn curled up in a wooden bowl or other such vessel, but who says that’s what every mom is into?  Sometimes it’s just about classic portraiture.

For this recent newborn session I headed up to northeast Georgia’s Clarkesville.  I always enjoy photographing weddings and portrait sessions in northeast Georgia as it’s stunning up there.  Also, I grew up in Tallulah Falls so perhaps I have a little of that mountain air in my DNA.  This beautiful new mother has been a marvelously substantial part of my life for 27 years so this session was of particular importance for me.

The biggest gift of being a newborn photographer is to be around the new and wonderful love.  There is nothing quite like it.

I feel so blessed to have had this wonderful woman in my life all of these years, and to watch her turn into a beautiful mother.  I’m already in love with this little guy, and have a feeling there will be many photo sessions to come.

I had to share a few images from this recent newborn photo shoot.  This little belle is the first daughter of a dear friend, and I was honored to photograph her.

This one is a favorite.  I photographed this gorgeous mom’s wedding many moons ago.  She was a radiant bride in this very veil.  How neat to drape it over her THIRD little child so many years later.    Love it.

I look forward to watching this little doll grow up.  With two big brothers she will no doubt have plenty of people looking out for her.

Getting the opportunity to photograph newborns is always a treat.  What’s not to love?  It’s a unique feeling to have the honor to capture such a special time in a family’s history.  I love getting to come back year after year, and watch the children grow up in front of my lens.  I have to say I really dig being around new parents as well.  They are always a little sleep deprived, and are just emitting love!  It’s endlessly adorable to me.    I worked with this growing family for the arrival of their first child.  He was a little pro, and we had a blast hanging out with him.  His first photo session was a smash!

This newborn’s father is a major music fan, so we used some vinyl as a prop.  Something that I always like to do in a portrait session of any kind is bring in the personality of my subjects.  I often ask my clients to tell me about themselves a bit before we even plan our shoot so that I can get some ideas.  For newborn portrait sessions I like to use things that come from YOUR home rather than some arbitrary prop that has been used in a dozen other portrait sessions.  I want each session to feel unique and special.

I had the pleasure to photograph this little newborn a while ago in Roswell, Georgia.  I met him and his proud parents at their home in fabulous Roswell.  I absolutely loved getting to meet this new little man, and I positively love being around new parents.

When I photograph a newborn it’s all about patience, and keeping it fun.  I always schedule several hours for a newborn shoot just in case.  You have to take little breaks to keep that tiny model happy after all. 

This adorable dog stole my heart, and seemed to be proud of the new baby too!

For this session I had the pleasure to photograph THREE generations.  What a wonderful moment to capture!  I met this sweet family group in Gainesville, Georgia.  Part of the family was in town for the weekend from Alabama, and I was so pleased to be their photographer.

When photographing a large family group I try to do as many different groupings as I can, and I am always looking for the candids that happen organically along the way.

What a fantastic portrait session this was!  I travelled from Atlanta to Northeast Georgia to help welcome this new little doll to the world with my lens.  It always touches my heart to see new parents.  It’s such a beautiful thing to watch all of that joy, love, and fear all wrapped up in one big emotion.  These two were total naturals with their new little bundle of joy.

This adorable new father is a childhood friend.  We had not seen each other in a decade, so it was really amazing to reconnect.  He definitely had ‘the touch’, and I suspect we might have a blooming daddy’s girl on our hands. 

I was positively in LOVE with all of these cute boots!  I was donning a pair of boots myself, so I felt right at home.

I recently photographed this beautiful mom-to-be at a family baby shower.  She is expecting her first, a little girl, and the shower had sweet touches of pink everywhere. 

How adorable are these little petit fours, from Henri’s?  Each one had a tiny pair of pink booties on top, and trust me when I say they were DELICIOUS!
